Better Stands initiative was trialled at the show in 2025 with a plan to implement the full initiative in 2026. Details on the Better Stands initiative is available here - Better Stands: Moving Towards Reusable Stands Together. All space only stand types will be assessed via the 10 point criteria Better Stands uses. The details required will be captured via the Stand Plan Submission process and additional fees will apply.
Sustainability Through Better Stands
At IBC2026, we are committed to driving positive change within the events industry by enhancing the experience for all participants.
The Better Stands initiative is designed to encourage exhibitors and their contractors to transition away from single-use, disposable stands in favour of sustainable, reusable structures.
Why Move Away from Disposable Stands?
A disposable stand refers to a space-only build that is used once and then discarded. These structures are typically made from low-quality materials and, after the event, are often dismantled and sent to landfill or incinerated for energy recovery. By adopting reusable stands, we aim to improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability across our events.
The Benefits of Better Stands
By embracing reusable stand structures, you gain several advantages:
- A smoother, more predictable build and breakdown process, reducing stress for all involved.
- Elimination of costly early access or late working hours.
- Enhanced brand reputation by demonstrating a commitment to sustainability.
- Increased client loyalty, as exhibitors are more likely to engage with service providers who align with their sustainability values.
- Reduced waste disposal costs and unexpected expenses.
Defining a Better Stand
The Better Stands programme has been divided into three key stages - Bronze, Silver, and Gold. This helps facilitate a gradual transition from disposable to reusable stands for all exhibitors.
- A stand reaches Bronze level if the first four elements are reused/will be reused.
- A stand reaches Silver level if, in addition to the first four elements, the other 4 elements (listed from 5 to 8) are/will be reused.
- A stand reaches Gold level if all 10 elements are/will be reused, where the last 2 can also be recycled.
How results are marked in the report:
Y = the element is reusable
N = the element is not reusable
N/A = the element does not apply to this stand
Elements marked N/A:
Do not apply to the stand build and will not affect the overall score
Compliance Monitoring
To ensure adherence to the Better Stands criteria, IBC has appointed Abraxys as the official assessing partner. Abraxys will oversee the entire process, from initial design submission through to the dismantling of the stand. Here is how they will ensure compliance at each stage:
• Pre-show: Abraxys will review each stand design submission, storing the Better Stands data submitted in the Stand Submissions Checklist, and approve the health and safety aspects of the stand.
• During build-up: as stands are constructed, Abraxys will conduct a thorough inspection of all stand elements against the 10-point checklist (above). They will take photos of each item, add comments and pre-classify them as disposable or reusable. All photos are stored in their internal software for accurate tracking.
• During dismantle: at the end of the event, Abraxys will return to verify how each element of the stand is handled. They will ensure that reusable items are indeed reused or recycled. For any items classified as disposable, Abraxys will attach photo evidence to the classification for transparency and accountability.
• Post show, the following steps will be taken:
| Stage | Details |
| Reporting | Abraxys sends Better Stands reports to contractors |
| Review Period | Contractors review reports and with the opportunity to dispute initial report findings |
| Final Report & Certification | Final report and certification level (Bronze, Silver, or Gold) shared with exhibitor. |
Modular Builds: A Practical Sustainability Solution
Modular stand designs offer an effective way to align with the Better Stands framework. These structures provide flexibility, cost savings, and reusability while minimizing waste.
Key Benefits of Modular Builds:
- Cost-Effective – Standardised components reduce material and labor costs.
- Flexible Design – Customisable arrangements align with brand aesthetics.
- Efficient Assembly – Quick installation and dismantling save time.
- Reusability – Components can be repurposed for future events.
- Adaptability – Modular stands fit various exhibition spaces.
- Ease of Transport – Compact and lightweight structures simplify logistics.
- Lower Environmental Impact – Reduced waste and emissions contribute to a greener industry.
